My Personal Birthing Experience

I am a woman who has never given birth or been pregnant before. It is interesting to learn more about women giving birth around the world. I was able to witness and support the birth of my niece. My sister was overdue and the doctor recommended that she arrive at the hospital a day before the birth. We packed several night gowns, slippers and other comfortable items that she would enjoy throughout her hospital stay. She was shy about letting the baby's father witness the birth due to the horrible smell and sight of stuff exiting...well you know where Im going with this :-)). She felt more comfortable with me being there so I held 1 leg while the nurse held the other leg and instructed her to push. Surprisingly all she felt was pressure from pushing, but no pain. Fortunately the doctor was able to give her an epidural and some pitocin several hours before delivery. I witnessed the crowning of the head. When the baby was born, I was surprised because my sister and I were the ones crying and the baby never made a sound....but her eyes were wide open and she looked so curious. This experience helped me to mature and feel more responsible for the life that just entered the world. As I reflect on this experience, I really do appreciate the support of well trained professionals in making this delivery a success!

  1. Hi Tiffiney..I also witnessed my sister give birth to her third daughter. Unlike your experience my sister gave birth in our family home on the sofa.(no joke)My niece came out bright eyed looking at all of our faces. Due to modern medicine, the paramedics were able to care for my sister and niece and take them to the hospital. Both were just fine.

  2. Hi Tiffiney,

I witnessed my second niece being born, and it was before my daughter. There were no complications, and to be able to witness my niece's head crowning was indescribable. It was pure joy!

However, I believe it prepared me to have an "easy" delivery myself, and I was mistaken there. I learned, after the birth of my own daughter, that not all deliveries are walks in the park!

I appreciate your comments! I look forward to reading more of your posts!

  4. Hello Tiffiney,

I have not had the experience of being a parent either. Like you, I was a part of my sister’s delivery as well but I was only the driver to the hospital as my sister was shy as for me not to enter the labor room with her. Thankfully our mother was with her when she gave birth. I do hope when I become a father, I too can support my wife in the labor room as you supported you sister. Just as you mention feeling mature and feeling more responsible for the new life, my family matured in the sense that we are more united as my new nephew's birth reminded us of new beginnings and a new start on life. A lot of grudges were let go.
